Stanba was determined to test new ideas on storage - as up to 30% of stored crops are lost to freezing and rot each winter in Ladakh. He and Thinles (with a lot of help from their daughter and stonemasons and a big JCB) have been building the first ventilated root cellar in Sabu for the past three weeks - and it's just a day away from completion now.
About half of his Johnny's seeds didn't care for Ladakhi conditions - with massive water shortages Stanba had no choice but to irrigate at 4am all June. The water was just at freezing - leaving the saturated soil at freezing and the seeds rebelled.
But the Mizuna, Red Choi, Red Russian Kale and Rosie Romaine loved it - and the Spring Raab went to town!.
Now as soon as I can get the plastic for his new trench greenhouse, he can plant mizuna for the winter.
