They get called "donkeys" in school. If they don't memorise their work *j*u*s*t* right, they get called donkeys, they are punished, and they are humiliated.
Not once have a found a kid who is actually a donkey. I think you can even google that and you won't find where the teacher was correct and the child turned out to be a donkey.
Winter Camp helps kids learn how to learn by tapping into their love for discovery. And it helps them prove to themselves all that they can do.
Yesterday I came back from yet another of our terribly remote villages. A people who are a minority population here in Ladakh and feel "different" a lot of the time. Long cold winters. Not much contact with Leh. Kids unsure of themselves and their future.
The kids here sing "We Shall Overcome" at their morning assemblies; an idea introduced by SECMOL (a local NGO) years ago. How prophetic.
